*        Work History

3 years with AWA/Thorn in radio/TV production - production test and repair.

3 years as fitter/turner/welder. (15 years as apprentice). Reason for leaving – emigrated to Australia

3 years as field repair for Applied Power - Automotive test equipment - Scopes, Dynamometers, Electronic/optical wheel aligners. Reason for leaving – the department was sold.

19 years with:

GEC Telecommunications, Chiswick, NSW.  1982–1988 – Design Lab technician

GEC Plessey, Silverwater, NSW 1988-1995 – Design Lab technician, Production support technician

Siemens GPT, Silverwater, NSW 1995-1999 – Design Engineer, VF Products

Siemens, North Ryde, NSW 1999-2001 – Design Engineer, VF Products

*        Responsibilities:

Product design - mixed analogue/digital/micro circuit design, simulation (PSpice & Workbench), schematic capture and pcb layout with Protel (98).

Assembly, test and Telstra approvals, functional tester design and implementation including software - PLM80, HPBasic, QuickBasic, C, C++.

Production Support, Quality support

*        Products (in chronological order and my part in their design)

Telstra DDN and TDCC network products.

I spent a large part of my time between 1982 and 1985 wire wrapping and debugging prototypes for the cards used in these products.

Test equipment for real-time, computer controlled, analogue measurement of phase.

Used for active trimming of hybrids in a hostile environment (sand blasting).

I introduced the first use of cad in our company for the design of the test equipment - Protel.

Support the PLM80 software for over 15 years.

Assist the design of the first Telstra modems including building and testing the functional testers and debugging the hybrid filters.

1988 I moved to Voice Product support for about 18 additional products, and testers inherited from the merger with Plessey.

RLT4 & RLTU, Voice Frequency plug-in cards for remote loop-back testing of leased telephone lines.

I did the schematic capture and PCB layouts.

Also the functional tester design and layouts for the 140x100mm, single sided, SM 1206 technology card.

APDP. An Exchange Subrack for alarm power distribution.

16x 8A circuit breakers, connectors, and a SM alarm panel.

I did the schematic and pcb design for all the panels.  Image 1 Image 2 Image 3 Image 4 Image 5

Rework 3 of the Plessey products for replacement of obsolete components. From through-hole and SM1206/0805.

AVFHA (MK1) - Adaptive Voice Frequency Hybrid Amplifier – A world first in 1990.

An analogue amplifier used to improve the quality of the audio on long telephone lines by boosting the high frequencies and basic gain whilst matching the line impedances automatically, within 0.1 seconds of the call being established..

I did the schematic capture and pcb layout for 4 prototypes and 3 issues of productions devices using mixed through-hole and sm1206.

I also had to debug the prototype boards and extensively modify them as the design continually changed.

Comply with all Telstra environmental and electrical requirements for subscriber equipment.

I build the test equipment - first in mixed wire-wrap and surface mount and then to full SM. Including the test software - more than 90%, in C++.

MPCD   Metering Pulse Converter  - Details

Two channels for converting 12khz transverse tone pulses, to 50Hz longitudinal pulses. Image Front Image Rear

This device enables older payphones to be used with new exchange equipment and over much longer distances.

I did the schematic capture and pcb design for the device including the switchmode and power amplifier design (requirements, 3A, 30Vp/p 0.2sec burst in one square inch of board).

The 3U Eurocard design contains 2 complete blocks of the RLTU logic in an area of 100x50mm and uses 0805 and 0603, double-sided, 4 layer, split plane technology.

I also did the design and complete construction of the test jigs in full SM technology. platten - mpcd.jpg

AVFHA MK2 - Adaptive Voice Frequency Hybrid Amplifier – Another world first in 1998 – digitally controlled conductance amplifiers

A complete redesign of the AVFHA after the obsolescence of the Plessey analogue conductance multipliers IC’s.

This required replacement of the conductance multipliers with digital devices under microprocessor control.

Also included was a major rework of the DC bypass circuit inductors to improve performance and robustness (9vp/p at 0.5A, pulse to 2A and protection to 2500V/1500A in an area of 1 sq inch each).

The increased power capabilities required a complete redesign of the power supply to a 6W (20W peak) , 9 rails, 100khz design.

The unit uses high density, double-sided, surface mount technology - 450+ parts on 100x140mm board (4 sub-boards). SO & PW packages 0603. Image Front  Image Rear

I did the schematic and pcb work for the product.

Also the design, building and commissioning of new test jigs at third-party premises (AEMS). Image Test Jig
